Squirrels are commonly found throughout Calgary, particularly thriving in established neighborhoods with mature trees. They are a familiar sight climbing trees and running across fence lines and rooftops.
The most well-known species is often the Eastern Gray Squirrel in North America, but all species are generally intelligent and highly persistent animals.
Squirrels cause costly damage by seeking entry into structures primarily by:
Exploiting Weak Points: Pushing against vulnerable areas like the soffit return to gain access to the roof line.
Gnawing: Chewing through wood and fascia to enlarge entry holes.
Once inside, squirrels will nest in the insulation, damage electrical wiring (creating a fire hazard), and contaminate the attic space.
The first and most important step is to contact your Pest Pro Exterminator service technician. We will review the right options to:
Safely and humanely remove the squirrels from the structure.
Determine what remediation steps are required to clean up damaged insulation and contaminated areas.
Seal the entry points to prevent re-entry and future infestations.
Get in touch today for the right advice and a guaranteed solution to your squirrel problem.

Squirrels are frequently considered pests due to their characteristic and destructive chewing behavior. This gnawing is essential for maintaining their continuously growing, sharp teeth and preventing overgrowth.
Destructive Habits:
They chew on various edible and inedible objects, including wires and structural wood.
They dig in planting pots and flower beds to pull out and chew on bulbs.
They dig to bury or recover seeds and nuts.
They build nests within structures, including attics and basements.
Signs of Infestation: It is always recommended to visually inspect at ground level where squirrels are coming and going from. On the interior of a structure, pay attention to scurrying noises and/or scratching on walls or ceiling materials.
Prevention: In residential areas with heavy squirrel populations, it is recommended to keep attics and basements sealed to prevent the property damage caused by nesting squirrels.
Tree squirrels include over a hundred species found globally (excluding Antarctica and Australia). They live predominantly among trees, distinguishing them from other squirrel types that live in ground burrows or between rocks.
The key to solving a squirrel problem is identifying the point of entry.
Access Point Identification: One of the first questions we ask clients is, "Where are you seeing the squirrels coming and going from?" The goal is to pinpoint the access hole(s).
Preferred Removal Method (Exclusion): Our first preference is to install squirrel one-way doors. This specialized device allows the squirrel to safely exit the roof line and encourages it to find a new home in the area. Once the squirrels have exited, the one-way door is removed, and the access holes are permanently sealed.
Alternative Removal: From time to time, live trapping is an option.
Program Focus: Pest Pro Exterminator offers a variety of pest management programs focused on passive deterrence, exclusion systems, and live trapping to reduce the pressure on your structure. Ask to speak to your service technician to find out the best solution for your structure.
How do I know if I have a mouse or a squirrel in a wall void?
The easiest way to differentiate is by using the knock test:
Knock firmly on the wall where you are hearing the noise.
If the noise stops, then reoccurs in the same general area within a couple of minutes, it is probably mice (due to a freeze response).
Larger wildlife (like squirrels) tends to have a flight response and will flee the disturbance quickly and completely.
