In Western Canada, the common "gopher" (properly known as the Richardson’s ground squirrel) is a persistent nuisance pest. They dig extensive holes and burrows, causing frustration for farmers, acreage owners, and homeowners alike.
These rodents are highly prevalent in the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Property Damage: Gophers destroy turf and lawn areas through their burrowing activity.
Safety Risk: Their burrows create hazards that can be dangerous for livestock and unsuspecting people who might step into a collapsed tunnel.
Economic Impact: While they may look "cute," Gophers can cause large economic damage to lawns, landscaping, and crops.
At Pest Pro Exterminator, we have the right pest management programs to control Gopher issues on your property effectively and safely.
Understanding which product or tool to use in solving a Gopher issue is paramount. Our expertise ensures we provide a safe and effective pest control solution tailored to your needs.

The Richardson’s ground squirrel (Gopher) creates burrows that are typically grouped closely together.
Location: They are commonly seen in grassy areas, open fields, and on the sides of hills. Their burrows create a visible mess in lawn and garden areas.
Activity: In the middle of the summer, you can see them running across the surface, often pausing and looking around. They are very active.
Social Habits: Female gophers are territorial toward other individuals but tolerate closely related females.
Size and Weight: Typical adult gophers are about 30 centimetres long. Their weight varies dramatically: 200–400 grams after emerging from hibernation in the spring, rising to 750 grams by the time they hibernate in the fall. Males are generally slightly larger.
Appearance: They are dark brown on the upper side and tan underneath.
Tail and Ears: Their tail is shorter and less bushy than other ground squirrels. Their ears are short and often barely noticeable when looking at them head-on.
Behavior: Their behavior is more like that of a prairie dog. Their tail is constantly trembling, earning them the nickname "flickertail."
We offer targeted programs designed for both acreages and residential settings to safely and effectively control Gopher issues.
Our service technicians use a variety of tools to solve your gopher problem, including:
The Burrow Rx: A highly effective tool that targets gophers in their tunnels.
Live Traps: Used for targeted and humane capture.
Seed Bait: Offered as part of the solution when appropriate.
Safety Protocols and Client Education
As part of our process, we prioritize safety. Before any work begins, we have a detailed discussion with the client about managing non-target animals such as dogs and horses. Before starting any Gopher program, talk to your Pest Pro Exterminator service technician for the right advice and strategy to solve your issue safely and effectively the first time.
I am worried about a gopher dying on the surface and being eaten by a non-target animal.
Your safety concerns are paramount. Our preference is to first utilize the Burrow Rx and live traps to solve your gopher issue, as these methods significantly reduce surface risk.
If seed bait is chosen by the client as part of the solution, our experience at Pest Pro Exterminator is that less than 2% of all gopher programs result in surface carcasses. We intentionally return approximately 48 – 72 hours later to ensure that no gopher carcasses are on the surface, maintaining a safe and effective result for the client.
What happens if my family pet eats the seed bait?
Poisons used to exterminate pests are regulated products that, if consumed by or exposed to a non-target animal, can be harmful or fatal. Our goal is always to eliminate the target pest without harming any other non-target animal.
Risk management starts with educating the client about managing family pets and small children. It includes:
Consultation: At the time of service, talking with the client about all service choices—the pros and cons of each treatment option.
Safety Follow-Up: Following up to ensure a safe and effective solution has been provided.
If a non-target animal such as a family pet is exposed to seed bait or any other chemical, it can be harmful or fatal. It is crucial to read the label and follow all label directions. If you are unsure about a product, ask for the right advice from the retailer, or contact your Pest Pro Exterminator service technician.
